only too…to = very…to，表示”非常…”

1）i shall be only too pleased to help him.

译文： 他忙，我是非常高兴的。

2) we are only too willing to do it for you.

译文：我们非常愿意为你做这件事。

注意：这个结构与“too…to…”结构的区别，后者表示“太……而不”

e.g. the patient is too weak to walk.

译文：这个病人太虚弱了，走不动路。

e.g. i am afraid the joy is too great to be true.

= i am afraid the joy is so great that it cannot be true.

译文：我高兴极了，生怕这种欢乐不是真的。

cannot…too…表示“无论怎么也不会过分”。这里的否定词not可以由never, scarecely等替换。

1）we can never put too much attention to reading comprehension.

译文：我们再怎么强调阅读理解也不为过。

2）a book may be compared to your neighbour; if it is good, it cannot last too long; if bad, you cannot get rid of it too early.

译文：一本书好比你的邻居；如果是好书，读书的时间再长也不嫌长；如果不是好书，你越早丢开它越好。
